Hilo man is charged with attempted robbery of bank

After a brief manhunt by Big Island police, a 38-year-old Hilo man was arrested and charged Wednesday with the attempted robbery of a downtown Hilo bank.

Daniel Alcaraz, of Hilo, was arrested after agreeing to meet with detectives on Wednesday afternoon. He was charged with second-degree robbery about 6:15 p.m.

Police said a man had entered a Kalakaua Street bank in South Hilo about 11 a.m. Oct. 7 and passed a demand note to a teller. He left without receiving any money.

Detectives identified Alcaraz and started a manhunt but did not locate him immediately.

Alcaraz was being held on $5,000 bail.
