A man died Tuesday after being shot by police officers on Kinau Street, authorities said.
Police were responding to a report from a man who said his uncle was wielding a butcher knife in his unit at 1212 Kinau St. about 4:40 p.m., according to a police dispatch report.
“The male threatened the officers with the knives and officers fired at him, critically injuring him,” a Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman said.
An Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman said one person was treated and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said the man later died.
Kim Lindvald, who lives at the low-income housing project where the man was shot, said she had just returned home on the 21st floor and several minutes later heard four bangs. She went to investigate and heard that police had shot a man.
She saw medical personnel place the victim into an ambulance and identified him as Walden Dang, who lived about eight floors below her.
“He gets angry very easily over small things,” she said.

The problem of mental illness out here and in America is huge. The only thing that might have been done differently is if the HPD officers had more extensive training dealing with unstable, disturbed persons. I am so sorry for the mentally disturbed man and his family but likely nothing else could have been done given what we have now.

According to television news, police responded to a 911 call but no info as to what the nature of the call was.
“Man With Knife Threatens Police, Shot and Killed.” Wouldn’t this be a more accurate headline?
…..or Man with behavioral issues shot by HPD before psychiatrist could be involved. The responding officers had left their tasers at Zippy’s and had no choice but to open fire. Traffic was snarled by the crush of personal injury attorneys arriving at the scene. City officials were seen planning a bake sale to pay for the coming lawsuit while a representative of SHPO was running about shouting “nothing to see here. go home”.

Tasers are options, not required use when officers are confronting a person armed a deadly weapon. A knife is a deadly weapon.

HPD’s staff psychiatrist was frantically trying to load his couch into the SWAT van, but unfortunately arrived on the scene too late to properly analyze the perp.

Police have other means to control situations. Shooting another human being is ridiculous.
