TOKYO — Officials say Japan’s emperor will undergo medical tests following the discovery of a heart problem.

The Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Akihito, 77, will have thorough tests Friday at a Tokyo hospital after the problem was detected in checkups last month. The agency says Akihito will continue his duties Wednesday and Thursday.

The emperor underwent an operation for prostate cancer in 2003 and has been undergoing hormonal therapy to prevent its recurrence. He has cut back on official duties because of health reasons. He did not make any foreign trips last year.
