Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire Thursday night in Kalihi that killed 22-year-old Herbert Moana Nuuanu III. Firefighters doused hot spots at the 1915 Kalihi St. house.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 22-year-old man who died in a fire that destroyed a Kalihi home Thursday as Herbert Moana Nuuanu III.

Cause of death was deferred pending further examination.

Damage to the multilevel home at 1915 Kalihi St. was estimated at $500,000.

The fire is believed to have been started in a first floor unit, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

However, fire investigators have not determined what started the blaze that destroyed the structure.

Residents say four families live in four sections of the house.

Firefighters discovered the man’s body 10 to 20 feet behind the door of a second-floor room

Forty firefighters responded to the 6:35 p.m. alarm fire, and the first company arrived in four minutes. The fire was under control at 7:12 p.m.
