The City and County of Honolulu has hired a tree care company to start Monday to remove two mature monkeypod trees along Kapiolani Boulevard.

One of the trees is near Pensacola Street and the other near South Street.

Lane closures are expected for the lane nearest the curb only beginning on Monday, and the work is expected to be completed by Wednesday, according to a city spokesman.

Officials from the city’s Division of Urban Forestry (DUF) noted several structural issues with the trees from multiple vehicle impacts.

The city says removing the trees will alleviate the threat of branch or tree failure.

The DUF plans to replace the trees with the same species.
