A surfer was hospitalized in critical condition after apparently losing consciousness in waters off Makaha Beach this afternoon.

Lifeguards swam out to rescue the man, who is described as in his 40s, from the water at about 1:45 p.m., said Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

After CPR was administered on the shore, the patient regained consciousness and was alert when EMS paramedics took over, treated him and took him to a local hospital, Enright said.
