A 47-year-old Molokai man pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud Thursday after he defrauded a woman of $45,000 and spent the money on an online girlfriend in the Philippines and a video game.
David Buchanan promised the woman returns of up to 600 percent, according to the indictment.
Instead of investing the money, Buchanan spent it on the girlfriend and an online adventure video game called Evony, FBI spokesman Tom Simon said outside of court.
After Buchanan pleaded guilty, his attorney Jefferson Willard asked U.S. District Court Chief Judge Susan Oki Mollway to delay sentencing until after Thanksgiving because Buchanan is planning to get married on June 28. Mollway declined.
Buchanan faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 25.
A source said Buchanan’s fiance is not the girlfriend from the Philippines, but a Japanese national. Buchanan declined to comment.
