Man dies after being struck by van at Hawaii County transfer station

A 78-year-old man died today after being struck by a van driven by a woman suspected of driving drunk at the Keaau Transfer Station, Hawaii County police reported.

Police identified him as Gary S. Ambrose of Keaau.

Ambrose was facing west at a trash chute to dump garbage when he was hit at about 11:13 a.m. by a 1990 Dodge van driven by a 66-year-old Hilo woman.

Ambrose was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m. today at the Hilo Medical Center.

The woman was treated and released to police custody.

Police arrested her on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence.

She remains in custody while police investigate.

The incident did not occur on a public roadway, so it is not counted as a fatality for statistical purposes, police said.

Two wrongs don’t make a Right? I’m not from Keaau .But today I live in this area and know how reckless these drivers are! Believe me when i say “Stupid” comes in all Shapes,Forms and yes! Age!
At Keaau’s Transfer Station?Everybody is trying to get in front of the line, without waiting their turn to off load their trash!

What puzzles me is: Why were the Security Guards removed from This transfer station? Was it “Austerity Measures”?It’s been more than 6 years.

Many including myself appreciated the job the security officers provided. They would greet you & help you if you needed help( for the Seniors) dumping your trash.

But MOST Importantly they Directed the Traffic coming in to dump their rubbish. Specifically ,At these trash Bins!

Yes this lady was wrong because she was Drunk, but was the County also negligent in allowing this tragedy to happen? By taking away those Security guards? Yep! I like to see how the county is going to spin this!

      Contingency: Due to Moderation.

Why were the Security Officers removed? When they provided an essential job like : Assisting & Directing Traffic at Keaau’s Transfer Station?
