Man dies at hospital after Manoa moped crash

A 54-year-old man died at the hospital after crashing his moped into a telephone pole in Manoa this morning, Honolulu police said.

Police said the man was headed downhill on Woodlawn Drive near Alani Drive around 7:06 a.m. when he lost control of the 2005 white moped he was driving

He suffered “massive head injuries” and was transported in extremely critical condition to Queens Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.

Police said the man was not wearing a helmet, and that no other vehicles or occupants appear to have been involved in the crash.

It has not yet been determined whether alcohol, drugs, or speed were factors in the crash.

Police closed Woodlawn Drive between Waipuna Rise and Alani Drive until about 9 a.m. as Traffic Division officers investigated the scene of the accident.

The man is the 36th traffic fatality on Oahu in 2013, compared to 32 traffic fatalities at this time in 2012.
