The Honolulu Medical Examiner is scheduled to conduct an autopsy Thursday on a Hawaii island man who was found face-down on a sidewalk in the seaside area of Kailua-Kona.
Walter Kamana, 52, was found badly injured and unconscious near the sea wall along Alii Drive.
Kamana was found at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday by patrol officers conducting routine checks near the Kailua pier, Hawaii County police said.
He was taken to Kona Community Hospital with a head injury and later moved in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
Kamana was pronounced dead at Queen’s at 9:16 a.m. Wednesday.
Police initially classified Kamana’s case as an assault and may reclassify it in light of his death.
