Broken palm fronds and tree damage mark the spot of a single-vehicle crash that killed a 35-year-old Waianae man Sunday.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 35-year-old Waianae man, who was killed when he lost control of his car early Sunday morning and hit a tree near Ko Olina, as Lawrence Lucero.

Police said Lucero was speeding towards Waianae on Farrington Highway about 2 a.m. when he lost control, and his vehicle traveled up an embankment and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene near Aliinui Drive.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

He was the 22nd traffic fatality this year, compared to 27 at this time last year on Oahu.
