HPD is investigating the scene where a 40-year-old male jumped from a second story apartment with a one-year-old male at the 3002 Waialae Ave. in Honolulu on Sunday June 15

Prosecutors charged a 35-year-old Kaimuki man with endangering the welfare of a minor when he apparently jumped off the second floor of an apartment building on Sunday with an 11-month old infant in his arms.

Zelig Pickering was initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, a class B felony.

However, because the infant, believed to be his son, was not injured, prosecutors charged Pickering with endangering welfare of a minor, a misdemeanor, on Monday.

Ambulance crews took the man and infant to the hospital in serious condition after the incident at the three-story apartment building at 3002 Waialae Ave. at about 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Authorities were alerted to the incident when a neighbor called to say a baby was crying, according to initial reports.

A neighbor said the man, his wife and baby moved into the building a couple of weeks ago.

Rob Santiago, an employee at nearby Island Recycling, said the man appeared to be conscious when he carried by stretcher to the ambulance.
