After a week, Maui firefighters have nearly contained a brush fire that blackened 4,700 acres since Saturday in Maalaea, over the West Maui Mountains to Ukumehame.

The once raging fire was called 80 to 90 percent contained today.

“It was a notable fire,” said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.

Two fire units continued to patrol and mop up hot spots on the Maalaea side of the fire and in a problem area near the Ukumehame Firing Range, Taomoto reported in a news release.

Small pockets of smoldering material will continue burning for several more days before it will be called extinguished, fire officials said.

Fire crews will continue monitoring the area along Honoapiilani Highway and douse hot spots.

The fire started Saturday in Maalaea, threatening about a dozen homes. Shops and homes were evacuated, but no structures were damaged.
