A 55-year-old Makawao man whose motorcycle collided with a car Saturday afternoon on Baldwin Avenue near Kee Road has died, Maui County officials said.

Police said a 69-year-old man driving south on Baldwin Avenue in a 2008 Nissan Versa crossed left of center just before 1 p.m., colliding head on with a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle headed northbound.

The motorcycle driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died later that day. The Nissan driver, also a Makawao man, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries.

Officials said the identity of the motorcycle operator, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, is being withheld until his next of kin can be notified.

Police said the operator of the Nissan was wearing a seatbelt, and that the vehicle’s airbags did deploy.

It is not yet known whether speed, drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision.

The incident is Maui County’s second fatality this year, compared to one at the same time last year.
