A 30-year-old Wailuku man may have been speeding when he lost control of his car on Hana Highway in Haiku Monday night and hit an utility pole, Maui police said.

The driver was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries following the accident that occurred just before 10 a.m.

Police said the victim was driving alone in a 1997 Cadillac four-door sedan traveling north on Hana Highway when he lost control of his car, crossed the center line and hit an utility pole on the south bound embankment north of Holokai Road.

After hitting the pole, the car continued northbound within the southbound embankment striking a cluster of mailboxes, then hit a second utility pole.
