Officials reopened beaches between Black Rock and Honokowai Beach Park on Maui at noon Wednesday after there were no shark sightings, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources. 

Lifeguards closed the beach Tuesday after a 58-year-old California man was attacked by a shark while surfing in clear waters off of Kaanapali Beach, fronting the Maui Kai condominium resort. The visitor of Marina Del Rey suffered two deep lacerations to this right thigh, above the knee. 

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and is in stable condition. He declined a request for an interview, according to hospital spokeswoman Carol Clark.

The 58-year-old man described the shark’s head to be the size of a basketball. After the attack occurred, lifeguards spotted a six-foot long shark in the area. Surfers who were in the water at another surf break said they had seen a 4-foot long shark in the area of the attack. A Maui county spokesman had said lifeguards believe the shark surfers saw was a reef shark.
