A paving contractor finished repairs on McCully Street, filling a giant hole created by a water main break Thursday afternoon.

The road reopened at about 4:30 a.m., about 35 hours after the 16-inch main ruptured at the Kapiolani Boulevard and McCully Street intersection, flooding a major entrance to Waikiki during the peak of rush hour Thursday afternoon.

Crews finished repairs on the pipe on Friday, restoring water to two customers without water.

The right westbound lane of Kapiolani Boulevard and all lanes of McCully Street between Lime Street and Kapiolani Boulevard had been closed after the main break.

Business in the nearby McCully Shopping Center was also affected, as customers avoided the area.

The main break happened at about 5:15 p.m. Thursday and backed up traffic on Kapiolani Boulevard and side streets as people tried to find ways around the road closure.
