Motorcyclist dies in Likelike Highway crash

Honolulu Police closed the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the Likelike Highway after a fatal motorcycle crash this morning.

A 28-year-old Kaneohe man died after crashing his motorcycle into a metal guard rail on the Likelike Highway early this morning.

Honolulu police said the 4:10 a.m. crash happened in the Kaneohe-bound lanes, about 240 feet before the Wilson Tunnel.

Police said the man was wearing a helmet.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Emergency Medical Services.

t is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but speed was a factor, police said.<

The road was dry and lit by overhead lighting at the time of the crash.

Police closed the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the Likelike Highway until about 9 a.m., while Traffic Division officers investigated the scene.

Mauka-bound traffic was rerouted at Nalanieha Street.

Police said the man is the 40th traffic fatality this year, compared to 43 at this time in 2012.
