The Navy plans to dispose up to 20 explosive items Friday at Kalaeloa by detonating them near the White Plains Beach.
The public at White Plains Beach, the Kalaeloa race track, or others living in the Kapolei area may hear a series of loud noises which indicate intentional detonation actions to render the items harmless, said the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii in a news release.
Tentative time for the detonation of the 20 devices used by the Navy to expel marine markers from military aircraft is between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Future detonations are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. to safely open the devices for inspection.
The devices were found during environmental restoration site inspection at Ordy Pond. Ordy Pond is located between the old Naval Air Station air field and White Plains Beach at Kalaeloa. It is within a partially fenced area and filled with fresh water. The pond is over 200 feet across and 19 feet deep at its deepest location.
“This is our second detonation action to protect the public,” said Aaron Poentis, Navy Region Hawaii Environmental Director. “At no time will any of the cultural and archeological resources adjacent to the project site be at risk. I want to make this point very clear since the Navy has taken important steps to avoid any culturally sensitive areas in executing this cleanup project.”
