That’s an increase of more than 11 percent compared with the same month a year ago.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board said Friday the state collected nearly $62 million in taxes based on those revenues.

That figure is up more than 24 percent compared with the the same period last year.

The $944 million in revenue is even better than 2008, when casinos won $934 million in August.

A breakdown shows winnings up more than 21 percent on the Las Vegas Strip, to more than $544 million. The Strip improved more than all other areas in the state.

Downtown Las Vegas was down more than 1 percent, to $41 million.
