No tsunami from 2nd strong quake along coast of Peru

The second strong earthquake in Peru on Saturday in as many days will not cause a tsunami in Hawaii.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred at 1:51 p.m. Hawaii time, about 4 miles west of Sechura in northwestern Peru, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The perceived shaking was strong and the potential damage was light near the quake’s epicenter, the agency said.

At 10 p.m. Friday, Hawaii time, a magnitude 6.1 tremblor occurred about 17 miles south southwest of Paracas along the west coast of Peru, the agency said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any advisories or warnings for Hawaii.

In August 2007, a tsunami advisory was issued for Hawaii after a magnitude 8.0 quake struck off the coast of central Peru, killing more than 500 people and damaging or destroying more than 39,700 buildings in the coastal country.

The quake caused a tsunami of 13 inches in Hilo, the survey said.

Peru is about 6,000 miles southeast of Hawaii.
