An 82-year-old man died after being hit by a car while attempting to walk across Kaneohe Bay Drive in front of the Bay View Golf Course this morning.

The crash happened about 6:45 a.m., police and city Department of Emergency Services personnel said.

The man apparently had pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway and was walking across the street to a home that sells papayas when he was struck by a Toyota Echo driven by a man, 39, heading west, a police official said.

There was a steady rain at the time of the crash, police said.

The victim was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition where he later died, police said.

A portion of Kaneohe Bay Drive was closed as police investigate the scene but it has since reopened.

The fatality is the second pedestrian death in two days on Oahu roads.

Just before dawn on Friday, a 60-year-old man died after he was struck by a pickup truck while trying to cross Farrington Highway in front of Kahe Point Beach Park.
