PHOENIX » Police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting a retired California police officer to death outside a Gila River casino.
The Phoenix Police Department says in a news release that John Campos Sr., 47, was arrested today by a patrol unit responding to a suspicious-person call.
Police say Campos fled on a bicycle to the area of 23rd Street and Magnolia where he collided with a vehicle, sustaining minor cuts.
Authorities had previously identified Campos’ son-in-law as a person of interest but have cleared him of any involvement.
Police say Campos allegedly shot 52-year-old Frank Pascua three times Thursday in the parking lot as he was trying to steal a car.
Campos then carjacked another vehicle and fled.
Pascua, a retired officer from Bakersfield, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
WHY is this news here?
Posssibly due to certain members of the media making a decision to “compensate” for the relative deluge of recent reports of police-on-civilian killings. Incidentally, approximately 1,000 U.S. civilians are shot to death by law enforcement each year not excluding by accident. Of that number, about 10% were people determined to be unarmed. If such homicides are evenly distributed throughout the year, one could expect to see a feature news story every few days.
