Police used a Taser and Stop Sticks, a device to pop tires on a moving vehicle, to arrest an Anahola man driving recklessly and speeding on Kuhio Highway in Kapaa, Kauai County officials said.

The chase also caused minor injuries to two police officers, officals said.

The suspect, Samuel Contrades, 30, appeared in court today on charges of second-degree reckless endangering, reckless driving, resisting an order to stop and resisting arrest.

Kauai police responded to a report of a reckless driver traveling at speeds of 80 to 90 mph on the highway at 4:45 a.m. Monday.

Officers saw a speeding white Nissan sedan and used the Stop Sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Contrades fled on foot and police used a Taser to finally detain him, police said. Officers took him to Wilcox Hospital before booking him at the Lihue Police Cellblock.
