A portable stove was the likely cause of a fire that caused $50,000 in damage Wednesday to a utility and storage building in Volcano on Hawaii island, firefighters said.

The cause, however, is listed as undetermined, Hawaii County fire officials said.

Fire officials said neighbors were watching the place for a friend, but there were no occupants when smoke was seen coming out from under the eaves of the 40-foot by 40-foot building.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which did not extend to the ceiling.

The fire was reported at 10:40 a.m. at 11-3333 Pa Alii St. in Royal Hawaiian Estates, and was extinguished at 11 a.m.
