Possible thunderstorms forecast for Big Isle, Maui this morning

A composite satellite image taken this morning shows clouds over the Big Island as a storm system begins to move away from the islands.

A winter storm moving over the eastern end of the state to the notheast was expected to bring showers, some heavy, and thunderstorms to the Big Island this morning.

The rains could also affect the windward and mauka areas of Oahu and Maui, with mostly light to moderate showers, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service. Maui also has a chance of thunderstorms this morning.

Skies should clear this afternoon as a storm system moves away from the islands to the northeast.

The forecast for Honolulu calls for partly sunny to mostly sunny skies with scattered showers.

Trades should stay with us for the next few days, though are expected to weaken this afternoon.
