Honolulu police dispatch reported an underground fire in downtown Honolulu as the cause of a temporary shutdown of Bishop Street this afternoon.
Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Darren Pai said there was a short circuit in the underground power lines, and HECO crews were continuing to make repairs on the cable about 4 p.m. today.
No outages were reported, he said.
Pai could not confirm any report of a fire, nor that a manhole cover had blown off, which was heard on police scanners.
Police completely shut down Bishop Street from Queen Street at about 1 p.m.
They later closed the southbound lanes of Bishop Street from Merchant Street. It was reopened by 1:28 p.m.
