Rescuers aid visitor swept into ocean in west Maui

Fire and Ocean Safety personnel rescued a 27-year-old Canadian man who was swept off the rocks just before noon Tuesday at a west Maui beach.

A Maui fire official reported that the call came at 11:58 a.m. of a man swept off the rocks at the Olivine Pools north of Kahakuloa Bay.

The Fire Department dispatched a rescue boat, a rescue crew, a helicopter, an engine, and Ocean Safety sent out a rescue watercraft.

The man was visiting from Calgary, Alberta, the fire official said.

Ocean Safety’s craft was first on scene and found the man exhausted, and rescuers placed him on the rescue watercraft, a fire official said.

The man was airlifted by fire personnel to a landing zone on shore. Firefighters treated the man, who received a few cuts on his legs and feet, but he did not require transport to the hospital.

Beachgoers threw the man a boogie board to stay afloat until rescue personnel arrived, and also called 911.
