Crews are attempting to remove a sailboat with a 26-foot fiberglass hull that ran aground at Kalapaki Beach on Kauai several days ago.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Thursday it’s monitoring the efforts of salvage crews to get the boat off the sand and rocks it’s resting on in front of the Kauai Marriott Hotel.

The vessel ran aground either Sunday evening or Monday morning amid high winds and rain.

The boat was moored in Nawiliwili on a temporary permit. But the winds and rain loosened the mooring and the sailboat ran aground.

The department says a caretaker has removed all fuel and petroleum from the vessel to prevent the release of hazardous materials. The hull has a crack near the bow.
