The state Department of Health’s Clean Water Branch is advising the public to stay out of Kaneohe Bay from Makani Kai Marina to Kaneohe Yacht Club because of a sanitary sewer overflow Sunday morning.

Heavy rains overnight from Tropical Storm Wali caused Kawa Stream to overflow and flood the Kawa Pump Station and the road behind the Kaneohe Pretreatment Facility, officials said.

The facility was under about 3- to 5-feet of waste water and was evacuated, Clean Water Branch officials said.

Crews are unable to estimate how much waste water was involved.

The city’s Department of Environmental Services are planning to clean, disinfect, and deodorize the area when it dries out.

Warning signs have been posted and officials are working to get water samples.
