The Coast Guards and Honolulu Fire Department continue to search for a missing 51-year-old Colorado man who went missing while surfing for the first time at Sunset Beach.

Robert Rumburg was reported missing Wednesday after he failed to make a flight to Colorado. His rental car and personal effects were found in the Sunset Beach home where he was staying.

Rumburg is six-foot-two and was last seen wearing black shorts. The Coast Guard said he was in excellent health with no medical issues

On Thursday, Coast Guard crews aboard the cutter Ahi and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter focused their searches along the North Shore off Kahuku and Kaena Point, out to approximately 20 miles from shore, covering 1,438 square miles. A Coast Guard C-130 aircraft was to join today’s search efforts.

The fire department is concentrating its efforts in shallower waters near the beaches between Sunset Beach to Rocky Point near Haleiwa, where Rumburg’s borrowed white surfboard was found in the ocean.

A fire department rescue boat, helicopter and jet skis are being used in today’s search that resumed at 6:15 this morning.

Fire department divers are searching the area where Rumburg is thought to have entered the ocean.
