The Coast Guard along with the Grand Princess cruise ship this morning resumed the search for a 54-year-old woman who is believed to have intentionally jumped from the vessel Wednesday hundreds of miles northeast of Hilo.

Princess Cruises, in a written statement, reported that the woman, a U.S. citizen, was witnessed intentionally going overboard from the Grand Princess about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The cruise line statement said the witness’ account was confirmed by closed-circuit television.

Upon being notified by a witness, the ship turned around and began searching in the area where the passenger was seen going overboard. The company said it immediately contacted the FBI and the Coast Guard. 

The Grand Princess was on day three of a 15-day, round-trip cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii.

The incident happened as the ship was about 650 miles northeast of Hilo, the cruise line said. The Coast Guard said a C-130 aircraft from Barbers Point Air Station resumed the search this morning 750 miles northeast of Hilo. 

The cruise line remained in the area to help with the search.
