State Supreme Court judicial nominee Michael Wilson listened as the Hawaii Bar Association's Gregory Markham testified this morning to the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Labor about Wilson's qualifications.

The state Senate Judiciary and Labor Committee will hold another hearing on Circuit Judge Michael Wilson’s nomination to the state Supreme Court on Saturday after more detailed questions have been raised about his fitness to serve.

The Hawaii State Bar Association on Wednesday disclosed the reasons behind its "unqualified" rating on Wilson, including the propriety of his conduct toward women in professional contexts.

The women’s caucus in the state Senate on Thursday said they want more information from Wilson, including a request to waive the confidentiality of his personnel file.

Sen. Clayton Hee, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary and Labor Committee, also said that a woman had approached him with concerns about Wilson that he wants the opportunity to investigate.

The committee had voted unanimously last week to recommend Wilson’s nomination. The full Senate has until early next week to vote.

Hee said that the committee could vote again after Saturday’s hearing.

Hee invited Wilson, the bar association, and anyone else the opportunity to come forward and comment on the nomination.

Sen. Malama Solomon and Sen. Laura Thielen told reporters that they take the issue of Wilson’s conduct toward women very seriously.
