Rain and snow are likely to continue on Hawaii island through tonight, but other islands are seeing the sun break through the clouds Tuesday afternoon.

A flash flood watch is posted for the Big Island until 6 p.m. because of the threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms there.

“While the bulk of heavy rain is expected to fall over windward slopes, locally heavy showers and thunderstorms may also affect leeward and interior areas,” foresters said.

Snow was falling on Mauna Kea, where a winter weather advisory is in effect.

Overnight, flooding closed Highway 19 near Ookala for about 3 hours until about 3 a.m.

The Big Island summits and the island of  Lanai are also under a wind advisory, because of  gusts over 50 mph.

Forecasters say there’s a chance of heavy showers for Maui as well, but no watches have been posted.

Other islands are seeing sunny skies, breezy northeast winds and scattered showers.

Remnants of a cold front and unstable atmospheric conditions near the Big Island are likely to keep soggy weather over windward sections of Hawaii island for the next several days. Windward Maui may also get rains.

Pleasant trade wind weather should return for the rest of the state through Thursday.

Winds will shift to the southeast on Friday and Kauai and Oahu may see rains by Friday night as another storm system moves down the island chain.

The rainy weather will continue on Saturday and should clear by Sunday afternoon, probably in time for Super Bowl parties on Oahu and Kauai, forecasters said.

But rains could continue through Sunday night for Maui and the Big Island.
