Soldier dies trying to cross H-2 Freeway on foot

A 22-year-old soldier died while trying to cross the H-2 Freeway on foot after a minor traffic accident, police said.

The accident happened about a quarter-mile north of the Kamehameha Highway onramp at 11:50 p.m. last night.

Police said the 22-year-old soldier, who lives in Wahiawa, hit the median barrier while going town-bound on the H-2 Freeway.

He stopped his vehicle and jumped over into the Wahiawa-bound lanes where he was hit by a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 25-year-old Mililani woman.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital.

Police said it is unclear why the man attempted to cross the freeway on foot.

The victim had been drinking, police said. Alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors for the Jetta driver, police said.

All Wahiawa-bound lanes of the freeway were closed until about 4:50 a.m. as police investigated the crash.

This is the 42nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 41 at the same time last year.
