State launches second phase of broadband speed campaign

The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs has launched the second phase of its Hawaii Broadband Map speed test campaign to gauge improvements in high speed Internet service statewide over the past two years.

The department is asking Internet users to test their broadband speed by going to http://www.hibroadbandmap.org/ and clicking on the “speed test” button at the bottom of the page.

The test, which takes just a few seconds, will tell users the upload and download speeds on their computer. It also sends the information, including the IP address of the computer, to a state data base for analysis.

Because broadband speeds vary depending on a variety of factors state is urging users to take the test several times on different days and at different locations.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie launched the Hawaii Broadband Initiative in August 2011 with the goal of achieving one gigabit per second connectivity throughout the state by 2018.
