State plans $300 million on airport, school and other projects

Gov. Neil Abercrombie says he’s spending $300 million for Hawaii construction projects modernizing airports, repairing schools, improving hurricane shelters, building school libraries and fixing roads.

The Democratic governor said in a statement yesterday these projects will create jobs and stimulate the economy.

The money for these projects come from the state’s capital improvement budget, which is backed by bonds and doesn’t directly affect Hawaii’s projected $1.3 billion estimated budget deficit over the next two years.

The Legislature previously appropriated money for the projects, but the governor must release it before it can be used.

Abercrombie says he wants to build vital infrastructure for the state and invest in its workforce.

Abercrombie also is asking the Legislature for another $1.7 billion in capital improvement money over the next two years.
