The state is reopening fishing in a protected area off Waikiki after closing it for a year to allow fish stocks to replenish.
The area runs from the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to the Diamond Head Lighthouse and about 500 yards out to sea.
Fishing will be allowed again beginning Jan. 1.
The Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area has been closed to fishing every other year since the late 1980s.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says fishermen may use fishing poles, thrownets and their hands to catch fish in the area. Spear fishing will be allowed only during daylight hours.
Fishing still isn’t allowed in the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District, which is between the Natatorium and the Kapahulu seawall.
