Strong winds break sailboat loose from mooring in Lahaina

The Coast Guard is coordinating the salvage and removal of a 20-foot sailboat that broke its mooring when strong gusty winds buffered Mala Boat Harbor in Lahaina Wednesday.

Maui firefighters said the vessel ran aground at the Mala Boat Ramp around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The sailboat ended up wedged into the corner of the old Mala Wharf pier structure and the rock breakwater protecting the boat launch ramp. The vessel was unoccupied and banging against the old pier.

The owner arrived after firefighters had secured the vessel to boulders on the breakwater. It was not seriously damaged and was not leaking any fuel.
