Honolulu Fire Department officials said an object found near the Hawaii Kai golf course along Kalanianaole Highway earlier Saturday is not unexploded ordnance, but a compressed gas cylinder.

Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the cylinder was found half buried around 1 p.m., and the department’s hazard materials crew was called to assess the situation.

The item tested negative for dangerous substances, and the crew determined it was not a threat, Lum said. Firefighters then called the state’s Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response office, which contacted a private contractor to evaluate how to best remove the item.

Lum said firefighters left the scene around 3 p.m.
