EVERETT, Wash. >> Donald Trump told thousands of supporters in Everett Tuesday evening that he would win in Washington in November, which hasn’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

“You know a Republican would never come to the state of Washington,” said Trump, who arrived for a rally and a fundraiser. “We’re gonna win it, that’s why I’m here.”

The New York businessman’s speech to cheering backers at Xfinity Arena was interrupted several times by protesters who were escorted out of the facility.

People started gathering outside the arena hours before the doors opened, with thousands gathering and the line stretching for blocks. There was a large police presence in the area. Protesters gathered near the facility but were outnumbered by Trump supporters.

An organized protest rally began Tuesday afternoon at Clark Park. Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson and other officials planned to attend before marching to the nearby arena.

Brandon Knox, 18, of Auburn, arrived early in the morning to line up to see the candidate.

“I like Trump because he’s pro-gun and he wants to enforce immigration,” he told The Daily Herald.

Several prominent Washington state Republicans were staying away from the Trump event, having previously said they wouldn’t support their party’s nominee. GOP Senate candidate Chris Vance, gubernatorial candidate Bill Bryant and Rep. Dave Reichert, who represents the state’s 8th Congressional District, have all said they won’t vote for Trump because of his controversial statements.

Trump last visited the state in May, when he held rallies in Spokane and Lynden.

A recent Elway Poll showed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton with a double-digit lead over Trump in Washington — 43 percent to 24 percent. The state hasn’t voted for a Republican candidate for president since 1984.

  • Nice to see there’s a candidate who takes the time to get out and meet regular people instead of one who hides from them and holds them in contempt.

  • Another state in which Trump will lose in the double digits. Regular people–yeah, she looks like a regular Mensa member that strips part-time.

    • Regular people–yeah, not the pompous over educated Ivy League sheet heads that got us in this mess. Good job Mr Trump, get out there and meet the real people. More Benghazi emails to be released. Wiki wiki HiLIARY where are you?

      • Let me ask you this: if you were to have cardiovascular surgery, or set up a complex limited liability corporation, or to construct a large bridge, or evaluate the practicality of cold fusion or developing a transmission grid for solar power, or a clean car like Tesla, or an operating system like Microsoft— who do you want, some barely high school graduate, who talks about making America great again, but in some bitter and cruel irony, cannot keep a job???

Or would you prefer someone who had the ability to navigate the most rigorous education in the world??

He is your summer time reading suggestion: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. BTW, Mr. Vance is a self described hillbilly who also happen to graduate from Yale Law…..his remarks are at once profound, lucid and highly relevant.

        • I would prefer the best person to do the job and of course that would be Donald Trump to be President not a lying corrupt to the core lying politician. Hillbilly Elegy…’Though “Hillbilly Elegy” is about people, not politics, it is an eye-opening field guide to an unruly and hard-to-understand group, many of them born and bred Democrats, who could cost Hillary Clinton what looked like an easy election win. White voters without a college degree have favored Republicans for some time — they voted for Mitt Romney by 18 points in 2012 — but they love Donald Trump. In an average of six polls this month, he is beating Clinton by a margin of 58 to 30 among these voters. The massive swing of white working-class voters, who made up 44 percent of the electorate in 2012, could more than cancel out her strengths among minorities and the college-educated.’ http://nypost.com/2016/07/30/why-white-trash-americans-are-flocking-to-donald-trump/

    • Ike, what have you got against strippers. I’ll have you know some of my best friends are exotic dancers and yes, a fair percentage of them are Mensa members.
