Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a primary night news conference, Tuesday, in New York.

NEW YORK >> Donald Trump’s social media post today to mark Cinco de Mayo immediately went viral, spawning criticism from some Latino groups that found it offensive and pandering.

Trump took to Twitter and Facebook with a picture of himself eating a taco bowl and the caption: “Happy Cinco de Mayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!”

The post generated tens of thousands of retweets and seemingly as many jokes. But not everyone found it amusing.

Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights organization, tweeted a short time later that the Republican presidential front-runner’s post was “clueless, offensive and self-promoting.”

“Eating a taco or wearing a sombrero doesn’t cut it w/our community in 2016,” Murguia tweeted.

Trump’s poll numbers among Latinos have been consistently poor since he began his campaign by promising to build a border wall to prevent “killers” and “rapists” from coming to the U.S. from Mexico. A Gallup poll released last month showed 77 percent of Hispanics had an unfavorable opinion of Trump, while only 12 percent viewed him favorably.

The Latino Victory Fund, a left-leaning political group, released a statement that said “Donald Trump is doubling down on his racist, anti-immigrant, anti-Latino and anti-Mexican rhetoric.” And Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico who has clashed with Trump over the proposal to build a border wall, joked to Fox News that he saw that Trump is “now having some enchiladas and some Mexican food – I hope that he will not get indigestion.”

Democrats also seized upon the post, suggesting it highlighted Trump’s weakness with Latinos. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign tweeted out a video — with Spanish subtitles — recounting Trump’s past comments supporting mass deportations of immigrants in the U.S. illegally.

A Trump campaign spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment about the reaction to the post.

Cinco de Mayor originally commemorated the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the United States, it has since been transformed into a celebration of Mexican culture and food.

The taco bowl — an American creation — is not actually on sale at the Trump Grill, but the Trump Cafe in the candidate’s namesake tower offers a “Taco Fiesta!” for $13.50.

Trump is now speaking to coal miners in West Virginia, telling them that he’s always been fascinated by coal mining. Hmmm, I didn’t know that about him…

    • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

Ive seen the tweet. It the stupidest thing I’ve seen in years. I guess next he will take a picture of himself at McD’s eating french fries and tweet out “I love the French!”.

      • richierich says:

Would you prefer he served fried chicken to African Americans

        • oxtail01 says:

          That’s next!

        • richierich says:

Or claimed to cary hot sauce in his handbag like the Clintons?

        • richierich says:

To late oxtail01. Bill Clinton beat him to it last week. But StarAdvertiser didn’t report on it because they are biased.

        • TigerEye says:

No, neither would I prefer he served coleslaw to a redhead.

        • inverse says:

Trump just does not get it. In all seriousness, this taco bowl Tweet it is almost to the level of a picture of Trump eating a plate of fried chicken and watermelon from some food joint in his building and Tweeting. “Best fried chicken and watermelon made at Trump tower. Love Blacks!” or Trump eating beef chow mein with a fortune cookie and Tweeting “Best beef chow mein with fortune cookie from Trump tower. Love Asians!” Trump is as racially tolerant as Paula Dean or Mel Gibson. Unless Hillary gets convicted from her email scandal and cannot serve to be president, Trump will lose when looking at the racial breakdown of the US voting population as there just is not enough Caucasian male voters (Trump has lost most moderate female Caucasian voters) who absolutely have to put white back into the Whitehouse. Maybe some third party candidate will rise up and defeat BOTH Hillary and Donald. Maybe Mitt Romney as President and Marco Rubio as vice president.

        • sarge22 says:

Mitt Romney had his chance and blew it badly He’s a wimp and choked big time. Trump is the man,”don’t believe me just watch”. Trump 2016

      • allie says:

        agree…clownish man

    • choyd says:

Trump is lying to the coal industry through his teeth. Those jobs are dying and have been dying since the early 2000s. Cheap natural gas, much cheaper and easier to extract coal in Wyoming, and automation have devastated the Appalachian coal industry’s jobs. Not to mention falling demand and huge debt loads taken out by short minded empty suits trying to get bigger. But he’ll pander and blame Obama and Clinton rather than actually tell the truth. And those people will eat it all up because it’s easier to blame Obama than acknowledge that things change and they must change with them or die.

  2. choyd says:

I don’t think Trump realizes that Cinco De Mayo is very much an American holiday, and not culturally all that important in Mexico, especially compared to the independence celebrations on September 16th.

But hey, at least he’s supporting the food and booze industry! Seriously, I’m seriously struggling to find good things to say about Trump to balance out my criticism.

  3. CriticalReader says:

In his Indiana primary victory speech, Trump claimed he’s going to put Coal Miners back to work mining. Next, he’ll be telling lead paint workers he’ll have them mixing lead into paint again soon, the US whaling fleet that he’ll have them harpooning whales again soon, and out of work subprime mortgage backed security dealers and credit default swap promoters they’ll be back at their desks by February 2017.

  4. ready2go says:

    This guy is a clown!

  5. inverse says:

Trump is as racially sensitive as Paula Dean or Mel Gibson.

  6. wrightj says:

It’s only Boy’s Day to me, but that taco bowl sure looks ono.

  7. honupono says:

is this kind of human you want to lead this great country of ours?

  8. justmyview371 says:

The comments by the Latino Victory Fund and La Raza were off the wall. Trump said nothing wrong. And Clinton was totally pandering!

    • inverse says:

That is Trumps problem. He just does not get it on why his Tweet is so racially insensitive. Not all Hispanic’s love taco bowls or all Asians love chow mein with a fortune cookie or all African Americans love fried chicken. It is called stereotyping and most racists cannot see beyond stereotyping which is what Trump did with his taco bowl tweet and La Raza responded in a similar “off the wall” stereotype that ALL Hispanics eat tacos and wear sombreros. Hillary should be convicted and go to jail for her email violations and subsequent lying but in the meantime, she and her campaign team probably lead by her husband are smart enough to capitalize on Trumps racist Tweet.

      • sarge22 says:

With millions of votes Trump doesn’t have a problem. The establishment has a big problem. Wait til he goes after the Clintons. Should be fun.

  9. FARKWARD says:

In 1988 Ronald Reagan declared May 5th–a “NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER”. SO.., Just do it–PRAY.

  10. Senior_Researcher says:

Drumpf continues being a caricature of a leader as he caricatures every constituent group out there. I can already see the next tweet: it will be a photo of him eating watermelon with text proclaiming “I love black people!”

  11. oxtail01 says:

I believe him 100%. He loves Hispanics as long as they’re cleaning his hotel rooms, raking leaves, or baby sitting his rich friend’s kids. What is not to love when he gets all that service while paying minimum wages. He’ll love the Asians and the Blacks just as much as long as they all know their place. Heil Trump, let the Aryan whites rule supreme. US is the domain of the whites and all you lowly non-whites don’t ever forget it or all of you will be deported back to your filthy countries.

    • sarge22 says:

Typical comment from the top notch racist. Sorry you have such a sad life. I hear Mr Trump loves oxtail soup.

      • klastri says:

In general terms, Trump supporters are gullible, poorly educated people who are incapable of critical thought. His nomination is the best thing that ever happened to the Democratic Party. Trump is going to take down the Senate, so President Clinton will be able to appoint anyone she wants for the Supreme Court. “I love the poorly edicated!” Go Trump!

        • oxtail01 says:

I don’t think “gullible, poorly educated…” is the sole domain of a particular Party or ideology, but I do think the Republican Party has elevated it to a higher form of comedy.

      • oxtail01 says:

Hey, I love whites like you – always good for a few laughs. May Allah be with you on this “day of prayer”.

      • oxtail01 says:

He does, he kissed my …. profusely.

    • kapiipl says:

      DUMP DRUMPF!

  12. Allaha says:

Hispanic nation muy bien. That is why most North Americans want to emigrate to South America.

  13. iwanaknow says:

If Trump becomes President………..will Spanish become a second language? Si’

  14. CKMSurf says:

Got to love comedy potential here.

  15. aiea7 says:

but hipanics don’t love him; they despise him. trump lies, now he will recant all of his derogatory comments about minorities, etc. just to get elected. this guy is full of it, not to be trusted.

  16. btaim says:

Wasn’t Trump characterizing himself as a strong believer in Christ and Christianity? If so, why is he focusing on Cinco de Mayo? May 5th this year was Ascension Day – one the biggest and most significant days on the Christian calendar. There is no mention of that AT ALL. I don’t even hear his so-called Christian supporters mentioning Ascension Day. Liars and hypocrites, all of them.

  17. Bean808 says:

And I’m positive they love him!

  18. llpof says:

The funniest response I saw was that his taco bowl was just a taco with a wall around it!
