The University of Hawaii’s flagship Manoa campus ranked No. 169 out of 310 public and private four-year institutions nationwide, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2017 BestColleges rankings.
The University of Hawaii’s flagship Manoa campus ranked No. 169 out of 310 public and private four-year institutions nationwide, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2017 Best Colleges rankings.
The rankings, according to U.S. News, focus on academic excellence, with schools rated on various measures of academic quality including graduation and retention rates; class size and student-to-faculty ratio; ACT/SAT scores; student selectivity; and alumni giving.
UH-Manoa was ranked against peers offering a full range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degree programs. The university tied with Union University, a private, Christian liberal arts school in Tennessee.
Last year’s report ranked Manoa in the No. 161 spot out of 280 colleges and universities. UH’s overall score climbed by 6 percentage points to 34 over last year’s score. Princeton University, ranked as the No. 1 school on the list of national universities, has an overall score of 100.
On the list of top public universities, UH Manoa landed in the No. 89 spot out of 133 schools. The University of California-Berkeley ranked No. 1 on that list.
The report also ranked universities that offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but few if any doctoral programs. These schools are rated against their peers by region — North, South, West and Midwest.
Chaminade University ranked No. 52 while Hawaii Pacific University and UH-Hilo tied for No. 61 out of 124 schools on the list of Best Regional Universities in the West.
Chaminade, a Catholic college in Kaimuki, tied with four other universities: Holy Names University in California; Humboldt State University; University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas; and Walla Walla University.
HPU, the state’s largest private university, and UH-Hilo tied with four other schools on the regional list: Eastern Washington University and three California State University campuses: Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Stanislaus.
Brigham Young University-Hawaii, meanwhile, ranked No. 14 on the list of Best Regional Colleges in the West. Schools included on this list focus almost entirely on undergraduate programs, the report said.
UH is solid but can be better with more effective administration and fewer unnecessary distractions such as football. Let us keep improving!

Doesn’t surprise me. UHM has some very solid departments and programs, some that could be great with more resources (like Music) and some that could use a little reorganizing and mission definition.

Hmmm… I don’t think that’s much to be proud of “near the middle”. So UHM is 169 out of 310 Public Universities (excluding Private schools); 155 is the Midpoint and you’re if happy with being 169th, then you have low expectations. We should shoot for top 25 percentile, at least (but that’s me,)… which would be 78th or better among public universities. Remember, Hawaii only has one public university, whereas states like California, have many to sustain and build.
Oh wait, I forgot about UH Hilo and UH West Oahu, so I guess Hawaii now has 3 public universities. I stand corrected…

The headline is somewhat misleading. US News & World Report actually publishes 10 different college rankings: a ranking for National Universities, a ranking for National Liberal Arts Colleges, four regional rankings for Regional Universities, and four regional rankings for Regional Colleges. Of all these, the National Universities represent the top all-around schools — roughly the top 10-15% in the country — since they offer the broadest range of academic programs, award large numbers of doctoral and masters degrees in addition to bachelors degrees, and have significant research spending. So just being “near the middle” of the National Universities ranking means UH is among the best colleges and universities in the country.
Schools rated behind UH in the National Universities ranking include the flagship universities of New Mexico, Idaho, Wyoming, Maine, West Virginia, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Alaska, and other familiar schools such as Texas Tech, Louisville, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Houston, Memphis, Fresno State, Utah State, Boise State, UTEP and UNLV. Pac-12 schools Oregon State and Washington State are not far ahead, being tied in the rankings at #143.
Looks like HSA conveniently forgot to include the real explanation of what the data means. Wonder how many at HSA send their kids to lesser schools than UHM? TRUTH IS WE HAVE A VERY EXCELLENT UNIVERSITY in a state with very poor and weak leadership that does not know what to do with a great school. Sad. Everyone outside Hawaii knows how good UHM is, it just is a secret within the state.
It’s island insecurity as Gov Burns used to comment. If it is here, it must not be very good.
BYU-Hawaii will shut down their Athletics Program in March 2017….they money they save will be used to bring more International students to live on Campus in remodeled Hales 4 & 6 dorms which will be done next year.
I-WORK program for International Student says: if they graduate in 3 years (going to school year round) and return home and stay home for one year, 25% of their student loans are forgiven….if they stay home a second year, another 25% of their loans are forgiven….what a deal.
I’am disappointed that BYUH did not give more information about the School to 2017 Best College rankings……they have 2800 enrolled (Fall 2016) and the goal is 3200 in the future.
BYUH President John Tanner has been in office one year and he said the honeymoon is over but the marriage continues.
