The Hawaii men’s basketball team was selected to finish last among nine teams in the Western Athletic Conference by both the league’s coaches and media this morning.

Utah State, the defending regular-season champion, was picked to win the WAC in both polls. New Mexico State won the WAC tournament last season and was tabbed second.

UH, which finished ninth and missed out on the WAC tournament last year, got little love despite — or perhaps because of — a coaching change and 10 newcomers on its roster.

The Rainbow Warriors, led by new coach Gib Arnold, trailed eighth-place Idaho in both polls.

Utah State forward Tai Wesley is the preseason player of the year in the coaches’ poll, while San Jose State guard Adrian Oliver received that honor in the media poll.

The UH women’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the coaches’ poll, and eighth in the media poll.

No UH player was selected for a preseason All-WAC team in either the men’s or the women’s polls.
