UH women’s basketball team beats Pacific for share of Big West lead

Ashleigh Karaitiana hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime and the Hawaii women’s basketball team moved into a tie with Pacific for the Big West Conference lead with a thrilling 74-71 defeat of the Tigers tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Shawna Kuehu scored the first seven points of the extra period for the Rainbow Wahine (13-11, 9-4 Big West). UOP’s Erica McKenzie was off the mark to tie the game again after Karaitiana’s big shot from the corner.

Kuehu had 17 points and eight rebounds and Kamilah Martin added 16 points and 12 boards. Martin had a good look at a game-winning basket at the end of regulation, but was off the mark.

UH held a one-point halftime lead and extended the gap to five early in the second half, but the Tigers came back to knot it up at the end of regulation. Gena Johnson had 22 points to lead UOP (19-6, 9-4), which was denied a program-record tying 20th win.

Monica DeAngelis hit a corner 3-pointer for a 64-61 lead with 1:05 left. UOP Johnson came back with drives to tie it up.

UH overcame poor free-throw shooting (22-for-40, 55 percent).

Pacific jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game with some ball pressure, but UH recovered in fine style and finished with 16 turnovers, even with UOP. The Wahine committed 27 giveaways in the Tigers’ 71-61 win in Stockton, Calif., last month.

Marissa Wimbley hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-25 UOP with three minutes left in the first half.

Kuehu put UH ahead 29-27 on a nifty spin move and UH took a 30-29 lead at the break.
