Visitors injured in collision with Kauai County bus

A Kauai County bus broadsided a vehicle in Wailua Tuesday, injuring two Australian visitors who were medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center are admitted into the intensive care unit.

According to a press release from the county, at approximately 9:18 p.m. Tuesday in Wailua a county bus operated by a 77-year-old driver was traveling south on Kuhio Highway near the entrance of Smith’s Luau when it broadsided a Nissan Altima attempting to cross the highway. Four Australian visitors were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Kauai police said the bus driver suffered non-life threatening arm injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to Wilcox Hospital, where he was treated and released. Six passengers on the bus were not injured.

The driver of the sedan, a 44-year-old woman, and front seat passenger, a 12-year-old girl, did not suffer any injuries. Police said the two backseat passengers, ages 60 and 16, were transported to Wilcox before they were medevaced to Queen’s. Police spokeswoman Sarah Blane said Wednesday they are stable, but critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Police are investigating the crash.
