A Waianae woman critically injured when her kart collided head-on with a pickup in Makaha this morning was trying to avoid a water puddle, police said.

The woman, 41, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition shortly after the 7:17 a.m. incident, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Emergency Services said.

Police traffic officers said the woman was traveling south on Makaha Valley Road when she turned right onto Kauaili Road. It appeared she made a wide turn in an effort to avoid a large puddle in the northwest corner of the intersection, police said.

The wide turn apparently caused her to collide head-on with the black Ford pickup truck driven a by a Waianae woman, 28, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured, nor was a 20-month-old girl in the truck, police said.

Go-carts are not legal on Hawaii streets.
