A 26-year-old woman passenger was killed early Tuesday morning when the car she was in crashed into a traffic signal pole in Lahaina.

Maui Police identified the victim as Kelly Peterson.

The accident occurred at 1:45 a.m at Honoapiilani Highway and Shaw Street in Lahaina, police said.

Speed may have been a factor in this crash, police added.

The driver, a 30-year-old Lahaina man driving a 1990 Toyota Corolla north on Honoapiilani Highway, struck a traffic signal pole. The vehicle continued through the intersection and hit a second traffic signal pole.

Maui police said Peterson, riding in the front passenger seat, was taken by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she died.

The driver was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

This is Maui County’s third fatality for 2014, compared to two at the same time last year. It was the second fatality in the month.
