Wong’s walk-off homer sends Rainbows to victory

Kolten Wong hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Hawaii a 6-5 victory over Portland on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

Wong picked the perfect time to hit his first two homers of the season, hitting a two-run shot in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5.

Hawaii starter Jesse Moore allowed three hits through the first seven innings. He allowed singles to the first two hitters in the eighth and Portland’s Matt Mardesich hit a three-run double off of Alex Capaul to give the Pilots a 5-3 lead.

Portland (8-6) loaded the bases in the ninth, but Zach Gallagher worked out of the jam without giving up a run.

Gallagher (2-0) threw two hitless innings to earn the win. Scott Burris gave up the home run to Wong to drop to 0-1.

Jeff Van Doornum hit a solo home run and Breland Alamadova doubled and scored twice for UH.

Hawaii (7-9) continues its seven-week homestand with the first of four games against Centenary on Friday.
