AIA Honolulu picks top designs

The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter, presented its 53rd Annual Design Awards at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Tuesday night.

The People’s Choice Award was determined from among 32 completed projects, upon which hundreds of people voted online through the AIA Honolulu website.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

» Makai Residence (North Kona). Architect Mark de Reus, de Reus Architects.

» Stone House (Kukio Bay, Hawaii island). Architect Shay Zak, Zak Architecture.

» Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa (Maldives). WATG.

AWARD OF MERIT

» Sushi Izakaya Dining Shinn (Honolulu). Architect Peter N. Vincent and lead designer Hiroto Suzuki, Peter Vincent Architects.

» Sheraton Waikiki. Architect Robert K. Iopa, WCIT Architecture.

» Honolulu Zoo entrance. Architect John J. Ida and designer Malia Goldberg, Urban Works.

UNBUILT AWARD

Recognizing projects unfinished or purely theoretical work:

» Renovations to Hale Aloha at Manono Campus, Hawaii Community College. Architect John J. Ida and lead designer Karen Lee, Urban Works.

MAYOR’S CHOICE AWARD

» A Vision for a 21st Century Ahupua‘a Kaupuni Village (Waianae). James Stone, Group 70 International.

JACK C. LIPMAN AIA MEMBERS’ CHOICE AWARD

» Honolulu Zoo entrance. Architect John J. Ida, Urban Works.

FIFTH ANNUAL PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

» Hawaii National Bank Building Renovation (Honolulu). John M. Hara, John Hara Associates.
